The Archaeological Research Institute

The Archaeological Research Institute is a 501C3 nonprofit organization shaped by passionate local residents, avocational and professional archaeologists to impart appreciation for the rich ancient archaeological heritage of the area.

Through hands-on education, we focus on the identification, preservation, and responsible scientific exploration of prehistoric archaeological sites in Southeast Indiana, Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky areas. ARI excavations are lead by professional archaeologists and are permitted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. The INDNR and the DHPA have a strict permitting process that requires a detailed archaeological plan that explains the proposed research questions and purpose for excavations. The Guard Site is a known archaeological site in the state of Indiana and all excavations at the site require a permit from the INDNR and DHPA.
